The application will be submitted to Defra, the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs, by the end of August.

There will then be a period of consultation before the bid is passed to the EU in Brussels in October. After six months of further consultation, a decision on whether to accept the application will be made, and if all goes to plan, protected status will be granted within two years.
