Doncaster has many attractions for the young and the young at heart. For all round family fun, Hatfield Water Park offers excellent water sports facilities with friendly instructors on hand for beginners.

Minutes from the town centre is Lakeside, home of The Dome, one of the UK's top sports and leisure attractions featuring The Lagoons, a magical 7 pool water world; The Ice Caps split-level ice rink, an indoor climbing wall and health and fitness facilities. The Keepmoat Stadium, home to Doncaster Rovers Football Club and Doncaster Rugby Football League Club, is located in this area, together with the Vue multi-screen cinema complex and The Doncaster Bowl. A wide range of child-friendly restaurants and bars make Lakeside a very popular family visitor destination.

There are a number of Museums and Galleries in the Borough of Doncaster. An absolute must see is the Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery situated in pleasant, enclosed gardens in the town centre. Opened in 1964 it tells the story of the Doncaster region using natural history, archaeology, local history, fine and decorative art. There is also a large and varied temporary exhibition programme throughout the year. The Regimental Museum of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry is housed in the same building and includes one of the most extensive medal collections to be exhibited in any museum in this country.

Aeroventure is a museum specializing in post-war aircraft and other flying memorabilia and is locater at Lakeside, just minutes from the town centre. The Trolley Bus Museum is to be found at Sandtoft, 15 miles north east of Doncaster and is home to Britain's largest collection of working trolley buses. For those wishing to discover more about the changing home, work and social life of people and communities across the Doncaster area, a visit to Cusworth Hall Museum & Park illustrates this progress over the past 250 years.

SHOPPING IN DONCASTER

Shopping in Doncaster offers a blend of tradition and progress; where the modern shopping experience presented by the flagship Frenchgate development is complemented by the warmth and charm of Doncaster's Market.

The new Frenchgate is located conveniently in the heart of Doncaster Town Centre, with easy access by bus or train from our transport interchange, or by car from our award-winning multi storey car park. With top brands and over 90 of your favourite stores, many of which are open late on Thursdays.

Doncaster Market, whose charter dates from 1248, is open each Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and features over 600 stalls serving the freshest meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. The market is well worth a visit with the Corn Exchange specialising in craft and gifts and the newly refurbished Wool Market offers a wide choice of textiles, haberdashery, cosmetics and household goods.

Also look out for the Farmer's Market, which takes place on the first and third Wednesday of every month, the traditional bargains from the festive Christmas market and regular visits from the travelling Continental market.

A wide selection of craft shops, designer boutiques and major high street names are to be found within the heart of Doncaster's town centre satisfying the demands of discerning shoppers, specialist collectors and of course, bargain hunters.

An abundance of cafes, restaurants and bars entice weary shoppers to rest awhile and Priory Walk with its pavement cafes, restaurants and bars attracts stylish lunchtime diners. The creation of a series of pedestrianised thoroughfares within the town centre feature innovative art and attractive seating areas and these make shopping in Doncaster's town centre an altogether rewarding experience.

SPORT & LEISURE

With Doncaster being home to the St Leger, the oldest classic horse race in the world, there is a strong sporting tradition in the borough. Doncaster Racecourse, having recently undergone major redevelopment work, provides over 30 days of top class racing throughout the year. Race days are a truly social occasion with ample time to savour good food and refreshments in addition to the racing action. Horse lovers should also try to visit the brand new St Leger Horse Park, home to the internationally acclaimed Northern Racing College, which has taster days throughout the year. In addition to looking around the stables and seeing trainee jockeys in the making, visitors are also invited to look round the interactive museum of the horse with it's racehorse simulator, to test their own horse riding abilities.

Fitness enthusiasts will relish a visit to the Dome Leisure Centre. With a climbing wall, fitness village, squash courts, sports hall, 7 fun pools and flumes and a split level ice rink there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Golfers will find 12 courses within the borough many of which are open to both members and non-members with very affordable green fees. Owston Hall Golf Club, played host to the 2002 Europro Tour, demonstrating the continually improving standard of golf courses in the area.

Anglers are also well catered for in Doncaster and the sighting of salmon in the River Don is a welcome endorsement of the efforts being made to return the rivers and canals to a more natural habitat. There are numerous bridleways, cycling and walking routes in the Doncaster area, many covering scenic routes of spectacular natural beauty, such as the Don Gorge.

Hatfield Water Park offers canoeing, dinghy sailing, windsurfing, sub-aqua and coarse fishing as well as a superb climbing wall and aerial walkway.

COUNTRYSIDE

Visitors to Doncaster will be pleasantly surprised by the vast choice of parks, woodlands, wetlands and nature reserves that abound in the 226 square miles that is the borough of Doncaster.

Sprotbrough Flash, one of the spectacular features of the Don Gorge is accessible by riverside paths and trails leading from Sprotbrough lock and can be views by walkers enjoying the Trans Pennine Trail.

Nearby Denaby Ings, Thorpe Marsh and Potteric Carr are Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Sites with an incredible array of flora and fauna.

DONCASTER BY NIGHT

Doncaster's amazing nightlife attracts visitors from far and wide; film lovers, theatre aficionados, connoisseurs and party revellers are attracted by the wide choice of restaurants, clubs and bars creating a vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere and a reputation as one of the best night-time venues in the North.

The variety of new venues that have opened recently are creating identifiable areas of choice. The Copley Road and Netherhall area for example is the place to go for small independent restaurants serving cuisine from around the world. Priory Walk has a number of contemporary venues from cappuccino bars to intimate jazz clubs and the centre of town offers everything from well known chain pubs such as Wetherspoons to family owned traditional pubs around the marketplace.
